Sonified Epileptic Rhythms
نویسندگان
چکیده
We describe techniques to sonify rhythmic activity of epileptic seizures as measured by human EEG. Eventbased mapping of parameters is found to be informative in terms of autoand cross-correlations of the multivariate data. For the study, a group of patients with childhood absence seizures are selected. We find consistent intra-patient conservation of the rhythmic pattern as well as inter-patient variations, especially in terms of cross-correlations. The sound synthesis is suitable for online sonification. Thus, the application of the proposed sonification in clinical monitoring is possible.

Rapidly Learned Identification of Epileptic Seizures from Sonified EEG
Sonification refers to a process by which data are converted into sound, providing an auditory alternative to visual display. Currently, the prevalent method for diagnosing seizures in epilepsy is by visually reading a patient's electroencephalogram (EEG). However, sonification of the EEG data provides certain advantages due to the nature of human auditory perception. We hypothesized that human...
متن کاملAnalysis of the EEG dynamics of epileptic activity in gelastic seizures using decomposition in independent components.
OBJECTIVE Gelastic seizures are a frequent and well established manifestation of the epilepsy associated with hypothalamic hamartomas. The scalp EEG recordings very seldom demonstrate clear spike activity and the information about the ictal epilepsy dynamics is limited. In this work, we try to isolate epileptic rhythms in gelastic seizures and study their generators. METHODS We extracted rhyt...
متن کاملAn Environment for Studying the Impact of Spatialising Sonified Graphs on Data Comprehension
We describe AudioCave, an environment for exploring the impact of spatialising sonified graphs on a set of numerical data comprehension tasks. Its design builds on findings regarding the effectiveness of sonified graphs for numerical data overview and discovery by visually impaired and blind students. We demonstrate its use as a test bed for comparing the approach of accessing a single sonified...
متن کاملSeparation of Rhythms of EEG Signals Based on Hilbert-Huang Transformation with Application to Seizure Detection
We present a new method for separation of the rhythms of the electroencephalogram (EEG) signal. The proposed method is based on the Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT). The HHT consists two steps namely empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and the Hilbert transform (HT). The EMD decomposes EEG signal into set of narrow-band intrinsic mode functions (IMFs), and the Hilbert transformation of these IMFs p...
متن کاملMulti-channel Sonification of Human Eeg
The electroencephalogram (EEG) provides a diagnostically important stream of multivariate data of the activity of the human brain. Various EEG sonification strategies have been proposed but auditory space has rarely been used to give cues about the location of specific events. Here we introduce a multivariate event-based sonification that, in addition to displaying salient rhythms, uses pitch a...
